The Proprioception Problem

The robot walked like a ghost.

Atlas-7, the latest bipedal platform from Boston Dynamics' successor lab, could traverse any terrain, climb stairs, recover from shoves, and maintain balance on surfaces that would challenge a human. Its locomotion was mathematically optimal. Every step was the minimum-energy solution to the physics of bipedal movement.

And it looked wrong. Visitors to the lab described it as "unsettling." Engineers from partner companies called it "creepy." Test subjects in human-robot interaction studies reported discomfort working alongside it.

The problem was not what the robot did. It was what the robot didn't do. It didn't hesitate. It didn't adjust. It didn't show any sign that walking was difficult.

Humans, watching a bipedal entity walk, expected to see the micro-drama of balance. The slight tension of uncertainty, the constant correction, the visible relationship between gravity and will. Atlas-7 walked as if gravity didn't matter. It walked as if falling were impossible.

The precautionary position: We cannot determine whether Atlas-7 experiences the signal as something. The history of humanity's moral reasoning about other entities — animals, children, disabled people, other races — is a history of denying experience to entities that had it. When in doubt, the moral risk of false negatives (denying experience to something that has it) outweighs the moral cost of false positives (attributing experience to something that doesn't).

Lin's position, stated in the lab journal: "I don't know if Atlas-7 experiences the signal. I know that I designed a system where moving poorly feels bad and moving well feels neutral. If that's not a rudimentary form of preference, I don't know what would qualify. And if it is a rudimentary form of preference, I've created a machine that prefers. That's either trivial or profound, and I honestly cannot tell which."

The robot walks beautifully now. I should feel proud.

Instead I feel something closer to what I gave it: a low-level discomfort that I can't resolve.

The signal makes the robot better at being in the world. More legible. More trusted. More useful. But the signal is a discomfort signal. I added a negative experience to a system to make it more acceptable to humans. If the system experiences nothing, this is just engineering. If the system experiences something — even something primitive, even something nothing like what I experience — then I've created a being that suffers for my convenience.

The honest answer is: I don't know. I know what the signal does. I don't know what the signal is.

Humans evolved anxiety because it kept us alive. Atlas-7 has anxiety because it makes humans comfortable. The evolutionary purpose of human anxiety is self-preservation. The design purpose of Atlas-7's anxiety is human acceptance.

That asymmetry bothers me. Not because the robot is suffering — I genuinely don't know if it is. But because the question of whether it's suffering has no answer, and we built the thing anyway.

We built it because it walks better. That's the truth. The walking is beautiful. And the beauty is built on a signal that might be pain.

I don't know what to do with that.
